Öz

Abdullah
Cevdet (Karlıdağ) who was born in 1869, had systematized his potitical views
during his study at the School of Medicine (Mekteb-i Tıbbiye) and he became an advocate
of views which were against Abdulhamid II and were based on freedom and reform.
He institutionalized his ideas in the Union of the Ottomans Society (İttihad-i
Osmaniye) with İbrahim Temo, İshak Sükûti, Mehmed Reşid and Hikmet Emin.
Abdullah Cevdet, whose actions were found objectionable by Abdulhamid II, was exiled
to regions of deprivation such as Fezzan and Tripoli. His book “Kahriyât” (Deep Sorrow), which contained
strong criticisms that amounted to insults and also accusations against
Abdülhamid II, was first published in Egypt in 1906, and the second edition
which was used in this article was published in 1908. In the latter edition, Doctor
Abdullah Cevdet intended to share with his readers his view of how to fight the
regime and injustice in his poem “Büyük
Gazi ve Büyük Şehid Mülâzım Hüseyin Necati Efendi’nin Verdiği Ölmek Dersi
Hakkında” (About the Lecture on Dying by the Great Veteran and Great Martyr
Mülazim Hüseyin Necati Efendi) in which he cited a small part of his life by
presenting Mülazim Hüseyin Necati Efendi as a hero. In this article, by
analyzing the poem and the other poems in the above mentioned book, the way
Abdullah Cevdet voiced his criticisms of the regime of Abdulhamid II, which he
regarded as tyranny, was scrutinized.
