GEÇMİŞTEN GÜNÜMÜZE DİŞ ÇÜRÜĞÜ EPİDEMİYOLOJİSİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİNDE KULLANILAN İNDEKSLER

Year 2021, Volume: 7 Issue: 3, 63 - 72, 31.12.2021

Abstract

INDICES USED FOR THE EVALUATION OF THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF DENTAL CARIES FROM PAST TO PRESENT

Year 2021, Volume: 7 Issue: 3, 63 - 72, 31.12.2021

Abstract

Dental caries, which incidence continues to increase in developing countries, is known as a preventable and controllable disease. In order to program community-based practices to prevent dental caries, the dental caries status in the community should be recorded reliably. Caries indices are defined as tools used to identify and record dental caries in individuals or populations. The Decayed, Missed, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index, which was introduced in 1938 and recommended for use by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been the most frequently used index in epidemiological studies from past to present. The increase in scientific data about the chemical process in the progression of caries has led to differences in the diagnosis and treatment concept. This situation has also caused changes in the features sought in the indices evaluating the epidemiology of dental caries in communities. In this review, indices developed to date to evaluate the epidemiology of dental caries were examined together.
