Developing a Subjective Well-Being Scale: Validity and Reliability Studies

Year 2005, Volume: 3 Issue: 23, 103 - 111, 17.04.2005

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report measure of subjective well-being. Subjective Well-Being Scale (SWS) is a Likert type scale -i-vhichcomposed of 46 items. The items ine/ude emotional re-sponses as' well as appraisals of various areas of personallife. The validiry and reliability of the instrument was testeci with clsample of 209 college students. The structual validity of SWS was examined by principle component analysis. ltem-total correlations of the scale were determinecL. Group means of the upper and lower 27 percentiles on SWS were compared with t test. This comparison revealed mean differences. To test concurrent validity, G'orrelations between scores on SWS and Baek Depression Inventory (BDI) were calculated. There was a signifieant relationship between scores on the two scales (r=-70). Cronbach-alfa eoefficient for the seale was found .93; test-retest correlation eoefficieney was r:.86. Considering reliability and validity study results, it can be eone/uded that SWS was a valid and reliable instrument.

Öznel İyi Oluş Ölçeği 'nin Geliştirilmesi:Geçerlik ve Güvenirlik Çalişması

Year 2005, Volume: 3 Issue: 23, 103 - 111, 17.04.2005
