Ethical leadership in educational organizations: Systematic analysis

Abstract

This research examines the process of providing guidance and inspiration by ethical leaders working in educational organisations. The focus is on how to internalise and implement ethical values within educational organisations. The aim of the study is to systematically analyse ethical leadership studies in educational organisations. The study aims to analyse the distribution of studies on ethical leadership by years, the type of studies, the methods used, the group from which data are collected, the topics most frequently associated with ethical leadership and the predictors of ethical leadership. To achieve this goal, a sample of Turkish educational organizations was selected, and a systematic analysis was performed on 71 articles, 70 master's theses, and 12 doctoral dissertataions published by Turkish academics in national and international indexes, as well as by the Higher Education Council of Türkiye between 2000 and 2023. The results of the research indicate that ethical leaders play a guiding role in educational organizations, inspiring the internalization and application of ethical values. The systematic analysis of the selected works shows that studies on ethical leaders and leadership generally adopt quantitative research approaches, mostly complemented by data collected from the audience, especially teachers. The most frequently studied topic related to ethical leadership is ethical leader behaviours. Research results show that there are studies showing the relationship between ethical leadership and positive or negative organisational behaviours and its effect on these behaviours. In the studies, policy makers and practitioners were generally suggested to improve principals' ethical leadership behaviours by "providing in-service training and postgraduate education opportunities". On the other hand, in the suggestions for researchers, it was frequently emphasised that the concept should be "studied in different samples and qualitative research should be expanded". It is suggested that school principals should adopt ethical leadership approaches as it will positively affect organisational performance and employee welfare.

Eğitim örgütlerinde etik liderlik: Sistematik analiz

Abstract

Bu araştırma, eğitim örgütlerinde görev yapan etik liderlerin rehberlik ve ilham sağlama sürecini incelemektedir. Odak noktası, etik değerlerin eğitim kurumları içinde nasıl içselleştirileceği ve uygulanacağıdır. Çalışmanın amacı, eğitim örgütlerinde gerçekleştirilen etik liderlik çalışmalarını sistemli bir şekilde analiz etmektir. Çalışmada, etik liderlikle ilgili yapılan çalışmaların yıllara göre dağılımı, türü, hangi yöntemlerin kullanıldığı, veri toplanan grup, en çok hangi konularla ilişkilendirildiği ve etik liderliğin nelerin yordayıcısı olduğunun analiz edilmesi hedeflenmektedir. Bu hedefe ulaşmak için, Türk akademisyenler tarafından 2000-2023 yılları arasında ulusal ve uluslararası dizinlerde ile Türkiye Yükseköğretim Kurumu Başkanlığı Tez Merkezi tarafından yayımlanan Türk eğitim örgütleri örneklemi üzerinden tamamlanmış 71 makale, 70 yüksek lisans tezi ve 12 doktora tezinin sistematik analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın sonuçları, etik liderlerin eğitim örgütlerinde rehberlik rolü oynadığını, etik değerlerin içselleştirilmesine ve uygulanmasına ilham kaynağı olduğunu göstermektedir. Seçilen eserlerin sistemli analizi, etik liderler ve liderlikle ilgili çalışmalarda genellikle nicel araştırma yaklaşımlarının benimsediğini, büyük çoğunlukla izleyicilerden, özellikle öğretmenlerden toplanan verilere tamamlandığını göstermektedir. Etik liderlikle ilgili en sık çalışılan konu, etik lider davranışlarıdır. Araştırma sonuçları, etik liderliğin pozitif veya negatif örgütsel davranışlarla olan ilişkisi ve bu davranışlar üzerinde etkini gösteren çalışmalar olduğunu göstermektedir. Araştırmalarda, politika yapıcı ve uygulayıcılara müdürlerin etik liderlik davranışlarının geliştirilmesine yönelik genel olarak “hizmetiçi eğitim ve lisansüstü eğitim olanaklarının sunulması” gibi öneriler sunulmuştur. Öte yandan araştırmacılara yönelik önerilerde sıklıkla kavramın “farklı örneklemlerde çalışılması ve nitel araştırmaların yaygınlaştırılması” vurgulanmıştır. Örgütsel performansı ve çalışanların refahını olumlu yönde etkileyeceği için okul müdürlerinin etik liderlik yaklaşımlarını benimsemesi gerektiği önerilmektedir.
