Abstract
Purpose: Purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of sensory integration therapy in
a child with West Syndrome. Material and Methods: The study included a 5-year-old male patient with
a diagnosis of West syndrome. In sensory process evaluation, modulation and praxis problems were
assessed by Dunn sensory profile and clinical observation of neuro-motor performance, independent
standing time was measured with a stopwatch. Physiotherapy program and sensory integration approach
were applied for 6 months, 2 days a week for 45 minutes. Deep pressure, proprioceptive, vestibular
and multisensory input activities were used for modulation problems. For bilateral coordination and
equilibrium, ball activities were used. The patient and her family were given sensory diet home program.
Results: In sensory process evaluation, visual, auditory, multi-sensory processing, oral sensory processing disorders and sensory modulation problems were identified in proprioceptive, tactile and
vestibular systems. Tactile defensiveness, postural deformities and gravitational insecurity were identified
in clinical observation of neuro-motor performance. When Dunn sensory profile scores prior to
the treatment, after the treatment were compared with the scores of all fields, an increase in exposure
was found. Especially, there has been a significant decrease in the tactile defensiveness and gravitational
insecurity, which was seen before the treatment. The mean time of independent standing before
treatment was 1minute 15 seconds. After the treatment, it increased to an average of 6 minute 30
seconds, without any loss of balance.Conclusion: West syndrome is a syndrome known with, infantile
spasms, mental disorder and hypsarrhythmia and characterized by EEG abnormality. In conclusion,
sensory integration therapy decreased modulation and praxis problems in people with motor mental
retardation and contributed to activity performance. To promote social participation of children with
West Syndrome, treatment program should include sensory integration therapy and further studies
should be conducted on larger sampling.

Abstract
Amaç: Çalışmamızın amacı, West Sendromlu bir olguda duyu bütünlüğü tedavisinin etkinliğini incelemektedir. Gereç ve yöntem: Çalışmamıza, 5 yaşında West sendromu tanısına sahip erkek olgu alınmıştır. Duyu süreci değerlendirilmesi, Dunn duyu profili ve nöromotor performansın klinik gözlemi ile modülasyon ve praksis sorunları değerlendirilip,bağımsız ayakta durma süresi kronometre ile ölçülmüştür. Bireye haftada 2 gün, 45’er dakika 6 ay boyunca fizyoterapi programı ile,duyu bütünlüğü yaklaşımı uygulandı. Modülasyon problemleri için derin basınç, kinestetik, proprioseptif, vestibular ve çoklu duyusal girdi sağlayan aktiviteler uygulandı. Bilateral koordinasyon ve denge gelişimi için top aktiviteleri ve vestibular sistem aktiviteleri çalışıldı. Ayrıca,aileye ve olguya tedavide uygulanan duyu diyeti ev programı olarak verildi. Sonuçlar: Duyu Süreci Değerlendirilmesinde, görsel, işitsel, çoklu duyusal işlem, oral duyusal işlem bozuklukları ve proprioseptif, taktil, vestibular sistemlerinde duyu modülasyonu sorunları tespit edildi. Nöromotor performansın klinik gözleminde, taktil savumacılık, postür bozuklukları, gravitasyonel güvensizlik problemleri saptandı.Tedavi öncesinde Dunn duyu profili skorları,tedavi sonrası ile karşılaştırıldığında özellikle etkilenim olan tüm alanların puanlarında artış olduğu görülmüştür. Tedavi öncesinde görülen özellikle taktil savunmacılık ve gravitasyonel güvensizlik problemlerinde belirgin azalma olmuştur. Tedavi öncesi bağımsız ayakta durma süresi ortalama 1 dakika 15 saniye iken, tedavi sonrası denge kaybı olmaksızın bu süre ortalama 6 dakika 30 saniyeye çıkmıştır. Tartışma: West sendromu, infantil spazmlar, zihinsel bozukluk ve hipsaritmi olarak bilinen bir EEG anormalliği ile karakterize bir sendromdur. Çalışmamızın sonucunda, duyu bütünlüğü tedavisinin, motor mental retardasyonu olanlarda modülasyon ve praksis sorunlarını azaltarak, aktivite performanlarının artmasına katkı sağladığı bulunmuştur. West sendrom tanılı bireylerin toplumsal katılımını arttırmak için tedavi programına duyu bütünlüğü tedavisininde eklenmesi ve bu konuda daha fazla olguda çalışmalar yapılması gerektiği düşünülmektedir
